A plague doctor was a medical physician who treated victims of the bubonic plague. In the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, some doctors wore a beak-like mask which was filled with aromatic items – usually medicinal herbs. The masks were designed to protect them from putrid air, which was seen as the cause of infection.

This handcrafted plague doctor mask is made from upholstery leather. It adjusts both up and down on your head, as well as side to side making it fit almost anyone. Most can even wear their glasses underneath if necessary! Wear a cloak or mantle too for a more complete look. Suitable for LARP, Renaissance, Dagorhir combat, or just wandering your faire or event.

Head straps of mask are usually longer than you will need. However, it is easier to make them shorter than to make them longer. So, if the straps are too long, use a sharp pair of scissors to shorten them after you are sure of the length necessary. Being crafted from leather, the plague doctor mask can be cleaned with ArmorAll Leather wipes. If it gets wet, hang it in a room with light, not in the dark corner of your closet. When not wearing this mask, we suggest you stuff the “beak” portion with tissue or brown paper. This keeps the mask in the shape you wish it to be when wearing. Leather obtains a memory for shape and thus when wearing it will be shaped correctly!
